AIS data issues: identify the discrepancy safely

Describe what the onboard equipment shows and how the issue came to your attention. A third-party vessel-tracking website is not a substitute for an authorized equipment assessment.

Separate onboard symptoms from external displays

Say whether the discrepancy appears on the vessel’s equipment, another vessel’s report, or an internet service. Preserve the observation time and exact wording. Do not infer a transmitter failure solely from an online map.

Use the authorized identity route

Identify the unit and request a controlled review of the vessel identity and configuration records. Never publish passwords or program new identity information based on a guess. The desk should confirm who is authorized to perform the requested task.

State the desired document

Distinguish troubleshooting from installation, identity correction, an annual test, or a survey-related report. Provide the vessel’s flag and class when a regulated output is involved and confirm the required approvals and certificate issuer before attendance.

Official context

The U.S. Coast Guard explains that AIS identity and configuration rules vary by device class; U.S.-sold Class B devices are not user configurable. Contact the installer, manufacturer, or authorized service route rather than attempting identity reprogramming.
