ECDIS inquiries: software, charts, hardware, or interfaces?

Start by identifying which layer of the system appears to be affected. A chart entitlement issue, a hardware fault, and a missing sensor input need different review paths.

Document the message and system

Copy the alarm or error exactly and identify the installed model. Version information should come from ordinary user screens or existing records. State whether the inquiry concerns chart coverage, an update, a display fault, or a sensor interface.

Keep operational decisions with the vessel

Do not install unapproved files, alter safety settings, or change the vessel’s navigation arrangements to follow a website guide. Agree the software source, authorization, backup arrangements, and work window with the responsible onboard and shoreside team.

Define the result before work

Ask whether the proposed work includes entitlement checks, supplier coordination, an installation record, functional verification, or training. Do not treat a completed software installation as proof of compliance or readiness for a particular voyage.

Official context

IMO describes ECDIS as a complex, safety-relevant software-based system involving manufacturers, chart producers, operators, and maintenance providers. A technical-support inquiry should make these responsibilities explicit.
